The tragedy began with a moderate eruption of Nevado del Ruiz, a stratovolcano in the Andes, at around 9:09 PM local time. These lahars traveled down river valleys, including the Lagunillas River, which ran directly through Armero. The largest lahar reached Armero at approximately 11:30 PM, burying the town under up to 5 meters of mud and debris.
