Arctic exploration is the human endeavor to reach and study the Arctic region, driven by quests for trade routes, scientific knowledge, and national prestige. Early voyages and the search for the Northwest Passage

The first recorded Arctic expeditions were Norse, with Erik the Red colonizing Greenland around 985 CE and Leif Erikson reaching North America around 1000 CE.1 In the 16th century, European powers sought a sea route to Asia, leading to expeditions by Martin Frobisher (1576–1578) and Henry Hudson (1607–1611), who charted Hudson Bay. The Northwest Passage remained elusive; John Franklin's 1845 expedition ended in tragedy, with all 129 men perishing, but subsequent searches mapped vast stretches of the Arctic archipelago. Roald Amundsen finally navigated the passage in 1903–1906 aboard the Gjøa, using a small vessel and careful planning.

The race for the North Pole

The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw a competitive push to reach the North Pole. Fridtjof Nansen's 1893–1896 drift expedition on the Fram proved the Arctic Ocean's currents, while Robert Peary claimed to have reached the pole in 1909, though his achievement remains disputed due to navigational errors. Richard E. Byrd's 1926 flight over the pole was later questioned. The first verified surface arrival was by a Soviet team led by Ivan Papanin in 1948, who landed by aircraft. The first unsupported foot expedition to the pole was completed by Ralph Plaisted in 1968, using snowmobiles.

Scientific and technological advances

Arctic exploration has driven major scientific and technological progress. The International Polar Years (1882–1883, 1932–1933, 2007–2008) coordinated multinational research on magnetism, meteorology, and glaciology.2 The 1958 voyage of the USS Nautilus, the first nuclear submarine to cross the Arctic Ocean under the ice, revolutionized underwater navigation and ice measurement. Modern icebreakers like the Swedish Oden and the Chinese Xue Long enable year-round access, while satellite remote sensing tracks sea-ice extent. These tools have revealed the Arctic's role in global climate, including the amplification of warming.

Lesser-known aspects

Beyond the famous names, many overlooked figures contributed. Matthew Henson, an African-American explorer, accompanied Peary and was likely the first to reach the pole area, yet received little recognition for decades.3 The 1913–1918 Canadian Arctic Expedition, led by Vilhjalmur Stefansson, discovered new islands and studied Inuit cultures, but was overshadowed by World War I. The Soviet Union's drifting ice stations, starting with North Pole-1 in 1937, provided continuous oceanographic data for decades. Also, the 1930s saw the first airship flights over the Arctic, including the Italia disaster in 1928, which prompted international rescue efforts.
