Archipelago

An archipelago is a group or chain of islands, usually associated with surrounding seas and a shared geological or geographical setting. Archipelagos range from compact volcanic clusters to vast island systems extending across thousands of kilometres. Their islands may be closely related in origin, as in a volcanic island arc, or grouped mainly because of location and historical naming conventions.1

Definition and formation

An archipelago is a geographically associated group of islands, whether or not all of them share the same origin. The term generally describes islands separated by shallow or deep water, and it can include islands, islets, rocks and reefs within one recognized system.1

Several geological processes produce archipelagos. Subduction can create curved volcanic island arcs, as in the Aleutian and Japanese archipelagos; rising magma over a mantle hotspot can form chains such as Hawaii; and the flooding of a continental margin can leave former hills or mountains as islands. Coral growth, sediment deposition and glacial change also build or reshape island groups.2 Because erosion, sea-level change and tectonic movement continue to alter coastlines, an archipelago is a changing landscape rather than a fixed arrangement.

Major geographic patterns

Archipelagos occur in every ocean and in some large lakes, but the most extensive examples lie along active plate boundaries. The Indonesian Archipelago occupies a tectonically complex zone between the Indian and Pacific oceans, while the Philippine Archipelago and the Japanese Archipelago form parts of the western Pacific island-arc system.

Other groups have different histories. The Hawaiian Islands are a linear volcanic chain produced as the Pacific Plate moved over a hotspot, while the Maldives consist largely of coral atolls built on older volcanic foundations. The Canadian Arctic Archipelago contains large continental islands shaped by glaciation, and the British Isles combine varied geological terrains with a long history of changing sea levels. Names and boundaries can differ among countries, maps and scientific studies, so there is no universal numerical threshold for what constitutes an archipelago.13

Ecology and human geography

Archipelagos produce distinctive ecological conditions because islands are separated, vary in size and elevation, and receive different patterns of wind, rainfall and ocean currents. Isolation can promote endemic species, while small populations are especially vulnerable to introduced predators, habitat loss, storms and sea-level rise.4

Human settlement in archipelagos has therefore been shaped by transport, freshwater availability and access to marine resources. Communities may occupy only a fraction of the available islands, with fishing, farming, trade and tourism concentrated around sheltered harbours. The sea is both a connecting route and a barrier: it encourages exchange between islands but can make government, healthcare and infrastructure expensive to provide. In many island states, conservation planning must address entire marine areas rather than treating each island as an isolated land unit.5

Lesser-known aspects

Archipelagos are not always chains of similar islands, and some contain several distinct island types within one named group. A single archipelago may include high volcanic islands, low coral cays, sedimentary islands, tidal flats and submerged banks, each supporting different habitats and settlement patterns.

The word also has a historical complication: Archipelago originally referred specifically to the Aegean Sea and later became a general term for island groups.1 Political geography can be just as important as geology; an archipelago may be administered as one country, divided among several states, or include disputed maritime boundaries. Modern mapping increasingly treats surrounding waters, reefs and seabed as part of the functional system. This matters for marine protected areas, fisheries management and climate adaptation, since ecological connections often cross boundaries drawn on land.45
