Archaeology investigates the human past by studying material remains, from stone tools to urban ruins. It is distinct from paleontology, which focuses on fossils, and from history, which relies on written records. Archaeologists employ methods such as excavation, survey, and remote sensing to uncover evidence of human activity, including settlement patterns, diet, trade, and social organization.

The discipline is often divided into prehistoric (before writing) and historic (with written records) archaeology, and into subfields like classical, maritime, industrial, and environmental archaeology. It also collaborates with natural sciences through archaeometry, using techniques like radiocarbon dating and DNA analysis to date and interpret finds.2

Historical development

Modern archaeology grew out of 18th- and 19th-century antiquarianism, when collectors studied ancient monuments and artifacts. Pioneers like Thomas Jefferson conducted early excavations, but the discipline became systematic with the work of Heinrich Schliemann at Troy and Flinders Petrie in Egypt, who introduced stratigraphic recording and seriation.

The 20th century saw the rise of processual archaeology, which emphasized scientific methods and cultural evolution, followed by post-processual approaches that highlighted interpretation and agency. Today, archaeology is global, with significant contributions from indigenous and community-based practices that challenge colonial narratives.

Methods and techniques

Archaeological research begins with survey and remote sensing, using aerial photography, LiDAR, and ground-penetrating radar to detect sites without excavation. Excavation is then conducted in controlled units, recording the three-dimensional context of each artifact to preserve stratigraphic relationships.3

Laboratory analysis includes dating methods such as radiocarbon, dendrochronology, and thermoluminescence, as well as material studies like petrography and isotopic analysis to trace origins and diets. Digital tools, including GIS and 3D modeling, now enable virtual reconstructions and data sharing across the globe.4

Lesser-known aspects

Beyond famous sites, archaeology includes niche fields like ethnoarchaeology, which studies living societies to interpret ancient behavior, and experimental archaeology, which recreates ancient technologies to test hypotheses. Underwater archaeology explores submerged landscapes, while conflict archaeology examines battlefields and internment camps.5

Notable but overlooked contributions include the work of women like Harriet Boyd Hawes, who excavated Minoan Gournia, and the role of local laborers whose skills were essential to major discoveries. Archaeology also informs modern issues, such as climate change adaptation, by revealing past human responses to environmental shifts.1
