Definition and origins

Arcade video games are dedicated public machines that charge for individual plays. Unlike home-console software, they were built around a cabinet, a coin mechanism, a screen, and controls engineered for continuous public use. Early examples followed electromechanical amusement machines, while advances in digital logic and display technology made interactive video games commercially practical.

Computer Space, released in 1971 by Nutting Associates, is generally recognized as the first commercially released arcade video game. Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney based its space-combat play on the earlier university computer game Spacewar!. Atari's Pong followed in 1972 and demonstrated that a simple sports simulation could appeal to a broad public audience.1

The format spread through dedicated arcades but also through bars, bowling alleys, convenience stores, and family restaurants. Operators typically earned revenue from each play, making reliability, visibility, and rapid player turnover as important as the game itself.

The golden age and its design

The arcade industry's defining expansion occurred from the late 1970s through the mid-1980s, when games became recognizable mass-media products. Space Invaders (1978), Asteroids (1979), Pac-Man (1980), and Donkey Kong (1981) established genres, characters, and play patterns that influenced later console and computer games.2

Arcade design emphasized immediate comprehension, escalating difficulty, high-score competition, and limited controls. A player could learn the basic objective within seconds, but mastering enemy patterns or timing required repeated attempts. This structure supported the coin-operated business model while producing public scoreboards and local rivalries.

Cabinets also became part of the medium's identity. Upright cabinets conserved floor space, cocktail tables suited head-to-head play, and elaborate racing, flight, light-gun, and motion cabinets used physical interfaces to distinguish arcades from home systems. The video-game crash of 1983 weakened the wider North American market, but arcades remained important in Japan and in specialized venues elsewhere.3

Technology, business, and cultural change

Arcade games advanced through specialized hardware rather than a single standardized platform. Manufacturers designed custom circuit boards, sprite and scrolling systems, sound chips, displays, and control panels for particular titles. Later machines added network connections, card systems, linked cabinets, force feedback, stereoscopic displays, and motion platforms.

The business model encouraged both technical spectacle and measurable competition. Operators could adjust difficulty, pricing, and attract modes, while manufacturers promoted recognizable franchises and sequel cabinets. In the 1990s, three-dimensional graphics helped sustain the sector through fighting games, racing games, and rhythm games, even as affordable home consoles reduced the arcade's technological advantage.

Arcades nevertheless preserved forms of social play that solitary home ownership did not always reproduce. Fighting-game communities, dance-game competitions, rhythm-game specialists, and score-focused players developed shared techniques and local cultures. Museums and preservation groups now treat original cabinets, printed artwork, control layouts, and operating software as parts of material computing history.

Lesser-known aspects

Arcade video games were often modified by their operating context, so the same title could feel different under different settings. Operators selected cabinet pricing and difficulty, replaced worn joysticks and buttons, and sometimes installed regional versions with altered text, censorship, or copyright notices. The physical machine therefore shaped access as much as the underlying program.

Not every arcade game used a conventional joystick and button panel. Dragon's Lair used laserdisc animation and branching timing prompts; Paperboy used bicycle-style handlebars; Marble Madness used trackballs; and rhythm games turned foot movement or hand percussion into input. Such experiments anticipated modern location-based entertainment and demonstrated that an arcade cabinet could be a specialized instrument rather than merely a small computer.

Preservation is unusually difficult because working cabinets depend on obsolete monitors, proprietary boards, coin hardware, and deteriorating plastics or artwork. Emulation can reproduce software behavior, but it may not fully reproduce latency, sound, cabinet scale, or the tactile character of original controls.4
