The Apple M1 is Apple's first ARM-based system on a chip (SoC) for Macs, announced on November 10, 2020. It marks Apple's transition from Intel x86-64 processors to its own Apple Silicon architecture, promising higher performance-per-watt and tighter hardware-software integration.1

Design and Architecture

The M1 integrates multiple components into a single package using a 5-nanometer process from TSMC.2 It features four high-performance 'Firestorm' cores and four energy-efficient 'Icestorm' cores in a hybrid big.LITTLE configuration, with the scheduler dynamically switching between them.3 The chip also includes an 8-core GPU (with one disabled in certain SKUs), a 16-core Neural Engine for machine learning tasks, and a unified memory architecture (up to 16 GB) that allows the CPU, GPU, and other processors to access the same pool of memory without copying data.

Performance and Efficiency

Apple claimed the M1 delivers the world's best CPU performance per watt and up to 3.5x faster CPU performance than previous MacBook Air models.1 In practice, benchmarks confirmed significant gains in single-threaded and multi-threaded tasks, while battery life extended to up to 20 hours on the MacBook Pro 13-inch.4 The unified memory architecture reduces latency and power consumption, and the integrated graphics outperform many discrete GPUs in its class.5

Software Ecosystem and Transition

The M1 required a robust software transition. Apple provided Rosetta 2, a translation layer that runs x86-64 applications on ARM, allowing most existing software to work initially. Native applications are optimized for ARM and can leverage the M1's performance. The transition also extended to the operating system: macOS Big Sur was the first to run natively on Apple Silicon, and subsequent versions have improved support and performance.6

Lesser-known aspects

Beyond the headline features, the M1 contains a dedicated image signal processor (ISP) and a Secure Enclave for hardware-based security.3 It also has a matrix coprocessor for matrix multiplication, which Apple does not publicly discuss. The M1's GPU introduced a new tile-based deferred rendering architecture, and the chip supports Thunderbolt 4 and USB 4. Interestingly, the M1's die has an area of only 120.5 mm², making it extremely compact. The naming of the cores ('Firestorm' and 'Icestorm') was leaked before the official announcement, and the M1's development is rumored to have cost Apple billions of dollars.
