Ant-Man is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics, and the name of a film series within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The character was created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby, first appearing in Tales to Astonish #27 in January 1962. The mantle has been held by several characters, most notably scientist Hank Pym and thief Scott Lang, both of whom use a suit that allows them to shrink to the size of an ant while retaining human strength.
Ant-Man debuted in Tales to Astonish #27 as scientist Hank Pym, who discovers a subatomic particle that allows size alteration. Pym's initial adventures were lighthearted, but later writers developed his complex personality, including his struggle with mental illness and his creation of Ultron, a sentient robot that became a major Avengers villain. In 1979, Scott Lang, an electronics expert and reformed thief, stole the Ant-Man suit to save his daughter's life, and later became the second Ant-Man with Pym's blessing. The character has also been portrayed by Eric O'Grady, a morally ambiguous S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, in the 2008 series Ant-Man.
The Ant-Man suit enables the wearer to shrink to insect size while retaining the strength of a full-sized human, allowing them to deliver powerful punches and ride ants. The helmet includes a communication device that allows control over ants via pheromones. In the comics, Pym also discovered the ability to grow to giant size, becoming Giant-Man. Ant-Man has appeared in various animated series and video games, but a lesser-known fact is that the character was originally intended to be a one-off story, and Pym's shrinking discovery was inspired by the 1957 film The Incredible Shrinking Man. In the comics, the Ant-Man helmet has been used by other characters, including a female version named Nadia Pym, who debuted in 2016. The Quantum Realm, a concept introduced in the MCU, has been compared to the 'Microverse' in the comics, a dimension that was renamed due to legal issues with the toy company Mego.
