Animal husbandry

Animal husbandry is the agricultural practice of breeding, raising, feeding, housing, and caring for domesticated animals for food, fiber, labor, companionship, or other human purposes. It combines biological knowledge with daily management of livestock and seeks to maintain animal health, productivity, welfare, and environmental sustainability.1

Scope and foundations

Animal husbandry is the practical management of domesticated animals throughout their production or working lives. It includes cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats, pigs, poultry, horses, camels, rabbits, bees, and farmed aquatic animals, although specialized aquaculture is often treated as a separate field. The central tasks are selecting breeding stock, providing feed and water, maintaining housing, controlling disease, handling animals safely, and managing reproduction and offspring.

Good husbandry depends on species-specific biology. Ruminants such as cattle and sheep digest fibrous plants through microbial fermentation, while poultry and pigs require nutritionally concentrated diets. Climate, breed, age, sex, and production goal affect appropriate management. Modern practice combines traditional knowledge with veterinary medicine, genetics, nutrition, ethology, and agricultural engineering.2

Production systems and management

Production systems range from extensive grazing to intensive, highly controlled housing, with many farms using mixed or semi-intensive arrangements. Pastoral systems rely largely on natural or planted forage and mobile herding; mixed crop-livestock farms integrate animals with crop production, using manure as fertilizer and crop residues as feed. Intensive systems can provide close monitoring and efficient use of land, but they require careful control of ventilation, stocking density, waste, and disease.

Management decisions cover breeding calendars, weaning, identification, record keeping, ration formulation, and transport. Selective breeding can improve growth, milk yield, wool, disease resistance, or temperament, but narrow selection may increase inherited disorders or reduce genetic diversity. Conservation of locally adapted breeds is therefore a practical and cultural priority, especially where animals tolerate heat, drought, parasites, or low-quality forage better than specialized breeds.3

Health, welfare, and biosecurity

Animal health and welfare are linked but not identical: a productive animal may still experience pain, fear, hunger, heat stress, or restricted movement. Welfare-oriented husbandry provides adequate food and water, suitable shelter, opportunities for species-typical behavior, humane handling, and prevention or prompt treatment of injury and disease. The internationally recognized “Five Freedoms” helped popularize these principles, while newer approaches emphasize the animal’s lived experience and positive states as well as the absence of suffering.4

Biosecurity reduces the introduction and spread of infectious disease through quarantine, vaccination where appropriate, sanitation, controlled movement, pest management, and surveillance. Responsible use of antibiotics is part of stewardship because unnecessary or incorrect treatment contributes to antimicrobial resistance, which affects animals, people, and ecosystems under the One Health approach.5

Lesser-known aspects

Animal husbandry also includes overlooked services and specialized traditions beyond meat and dairy production. Bees provide pollination as well as honey; working equids support transport and livelihoods; camelids are adapted to arid environments; and small livestock can supply food and income where land and capital are limited. Indigenous and pastoral communities often maintain detailed knowledge of seasonal movement, forage, breeding, and disease signs, making local expertise valuable in development programs.

Husbandry has environmental trade-offs rather than a single universal footprint. Grazing can contribute to soil degradation when poorly managed, yet well-managed pasture may support biodiversity and store soil carbon; manure can recycle nutrients but can also pollute water or release methane and nitrous oxide. Climate change increases heat stress, drought exposure, emerging disease risks, and feed insecurity, encouraging shade, water planning, heat-tolerant genetics, improved forage, and diversified systems.16
