Advanced Mobile Phone Service

Advanced Mobile Phone Service (AMPS) was the first-generation analog cellular telephone system introduced by AT&T in the United States in 1983. It operated in the 800 MHz band and used frequency-division multiple access (FDMA) to allocate channels, enabling mobile calls to be handed off seamlessly between cells. AMPS set the technical and regulatory template for subsequent cellular networks worldwide.

Origins and development

AMPS was developed by Bell Labs, the research arm of AT&T, building on earlier mobile radio systems. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) allocated spectrum in 1970, and after years of technical trials, the first commercial AMPS service launched in Chicago on October 13, 1983. The system was designed to reuse frequencies across geographic cells, dramatically increasing capacity compared to earlier single-site mobile telephony. AT&T's cellular architecture, including handoff and roaming, became the blueprint for later digital systems.

Technical operation

AMPS used analog frequency modulation (FM) for voice, with each call occupying a 30 kHz channel. Control channels carried signaling data for call setup, paging, and handoff, using a binary data format at 10 kbps. The system employed a seven-cell reuse pattern, and power control helped minimize interference. Handoffs were initiated by the mobile switching center (MSC) when signal strength dropped, allowing calls to continue as users moved across cell boundaries.1 The architecture influenced the later IS-54 and IS-136 digital standards.

Deployment and legacy

AMPS spread rapidly across the United States, with over 700 markets licensed by the mid-1980s. It also became the basis for cellular systems in many other countries, including variants like TACS in the UK and NMT in Scandinavia. AMPS remained in service for decades, but its analog nature made it vulnerable to eavesdropping and cloning. The FCC mandated a transition to digital, and by 2008 most US carriers had shut down AMPS networks.2 The 800 MHz spectrum was reallocated for digital services.

Lesser-known aspects

AMPS had a lesser-known sibling, Narrowband AMPS (N-AMPS), introduced in the early 1990s to increase capacity by splitting channels into sub-bands. Also, the first AMPS call was made by Bob Barnett, a former Bell Labs engineer, to the grandson of Alexander Graham Bell. AMPS supported early data services like Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD), which operated on idle voice channels. The system's control channel protocol was later adapted for the IS-95 CDMA standard's overhead messaging. AMPS also played a role in the development of the 911 emergency call system, as it was the first to support enhanced 911 location services in some areas.3
