Early life and education

Ada Yonath was born in 1939 in the British Mandate of Palestine (now Israel) to a poor Jewish family. Her father, a rabbi, died when she was young, and the family moved to Jerusalem. Despite financial hardship, she excelled academically and earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1962, followed by a master's in biochemistry in 1964 and a PhD in X-ray crystallography from the Weizmann Institute of Science in 1968.1

Ribosome structure and the Nobel Prize

Yonath's major contribution was determining the high-resolution structure of the ribosome, a complex of RNA and proteins that translates genetic information into proteins. In the 1980s, she pioneered the use of cryo-crystallography to stabilize ribosomes from extremophilic bacteria, which are more robust and yield better crystals.
