Acoustic ecology emerged in the late 1960s through the work of Canadian composer and environmentalist R. Murray Schafer, who coined the term 'soundscape' to describe the acoustic environment as perceived by humans. Schafer's World Soundscape Project at Simon Fraser University aimed to document and analyze soundscapes, leading to the foundational text The Tuning of the World (1977). The field integrates acoustics, ecology, and social science, focusing on the relationships between living organisms and their sonic surroundings.
