Academic publishing is the system by which scholarly research is disseminated, evaluated, and preserved. It involves the creation, peer review, and distribution of research findings in journals, books, and conference proceedings. The process is central to the advancement of knowledge, as it enables researchers to share results, establish priority, and build upon prior work. The modern system has evolved from the 17th-century scientific journals to a complex industry facing challenges such as rising costs, open access mandates, and the integrity of peer review.
The first academic journals emerged in the 17th century, with the Journal des sçavans and the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society in 1665. These periodicals formalized the communication of scientific discoveries, replacing private letters and books. The Philosophical Transactions introduced the concept of peer review, initially as editorial screening, and established the practice of registering priority of discovery.1
Over the centuries, the number of journals grew exponentially, driven by the specialization of disciplines and the expansion of higher education. The 20th century saw the rise of commercial publishers, who consolidated the market and introduced the subscription model. The late 20th and early 21st centuries brought digital publishing, which reduced distribution costs but also led to the 'serial crisis'—the unsustainable rise in journal subscription prices.
Peer review is the cornerstone of academic publishing, intended to ensure the quality and validity of research. In the traditional model, manuscripts are submitted to a journal, where the editor sends them to independent experts for evaluation. Reviewers assess the methodology, significance, and originality of the work, providing recommendations to accept, revise, or reject. This process can be single-blind, double-blind, or open, with varying degrees of transparency.
Despite its importance, peer review faces criticism for being slow, biased, and susceptible to abuse. Studies have shown that reviewer agreement is often low, and the process can delay the dissemination of important findings. In response, innovations such as open peer review, post-publication review, and the use of preprint servers have gained traction. These approaches aim to increase accountability and speed, while maintaining rigorous standards.2
Open access (OA) publishing makes research freely available to readers, removing paywalls and allowing unrestricted reuse. The movement gained momentum in the early 2000s with the Budapest Open Access Initiative, which advocated for two main strategies: self-archiving (green OA) and open access journals (gold OA). OA journals often charge article processing charges (APCs) to authors, which can be a barrier for researchers without funding.3
The business models of academic publishing are diverse, ranging from traditional subscription journals to fully OA journals, and hybrid models that offer OA options within subscription journals. Major publishers like Elsevier, Springer Nature, and Wiley have embraced OA, but concerns about predatory journals—which charge fees without providing legitimate peer review—have led to the development of tools like Think.Check.Submit. The Plan S initiative, launched by European funders, requires that research funded by public grants be published in compliant OA venues, accelerating the shift toward OA.4
Beyond the mainstream narrative, academic publishing has several niche dimensions. For instance, the 'publish or perish' culture has led to the proliferation of 'salami slicing'—splitting research into the smallest publishable units—and the rise of 'predatory' conferences that mimic legitimate events. The use of metrics like the h-index and impact factor has become controversial, as they are often misused in hiring and promotion decisions.5
Another overlooked aspect is the role of 'ghostwriting' in medical literature, where pharmaceutical companies have been found to draft articles for academic authors. Additionally, the 'reproducibility crisis' has prompted journals to adopt checklists and data-sharing policies to improve transparency. The rise of 'mega-journals' like PLOS ONE, which publish any methodologically sound research regardless of perceived significance, challenges the traditional notion of journal prestige.6
