The AN/TPQ-53 is a mobile counterfire radar system developed by Lockheed Martin for the U.S. Army, designed to detect, locate, and track enemy indirect fire (mortars, artillery, rockets) and cue counter-battery fire. It replaced the aging AN/TPQ-36 and AN/TPQ-37 systems, offering a 360-degree coverage capability and advanced electronic scanning.
The AN/TPQ-53 was developed under the U.S. Army's Counterfire Target Acquisition Radar (CTAR) program, with Lockheed Martin as the prime contractor. The system was designed to replace the legacy AN/TPQ-36 and AN/TPQ-37 radars, which had limitations in mobility and electronic counter-countermeasures. The first units were delivered in 2010, and the system saw operational deployment in Afghanistan and Iraq, where it proved effective in detecting insurgent indirect fire.
The AN/TPQ-53 uses an active electronically scanned array (AESA) antenna, which provides rapid beam steering and the ability to track multiple targets simultaneously. It can operate in two modes: a 360-degree mode for full situational awareness and a 90-degree sector mode for focused surveillance. The system is mounted on a trailer, towed by a tactical vehicle, and can be set up in under two minutes. It automatically detects and classifies incoming projectiles, calculates their point of origin, and provides targeting data to counter-battery assets.
The AN/TPQ-53 has been used extensively in counter-insurgency operations, where it helped reduce the effectiveness of indirect fire attacks on forward operating bases. In Afghanistan, the system was credited with significantly improving force protection. It has also been integrated into the U.S. Army's Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) architecture, providing sensor data to command and control systems.1
The AN/TPQ-53 has undergone continuous upgrades, including enhanced software for improved classification algorithms and increased resistance to electronic jamming. A variant known as the AN/TPQ-53(V)2 was developed for the U.S. Marine Corps, with a lighter configuration for rapid deployment. The system is also being considered for integration with directed energy weapons for counter-UAS applications.2
One lesser-known fact is that the AN/TPQ-53 was originally developed under the name 'EQ-36' (Enhanced Firefinder), and its designation was changed to AN/TPQ-53 in 2010. The system uses a Gallium Nitride (GaN) based AESA, which offers higher power efficiency and reliability compared to older Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) arrays. Additionally, the radar can be operated remotely via a laptop, allowing operators to maintain a safe distance. The system has also been exported to allied nations, including Australia and the United Arab Emirates, under Foreign Military Sales agreements.3
The AN/TPQ-53 is a key asset in modern counterfire operations, with its advanced AESA technology and rapid deployment capabilities.
