2017 Las Vegas shooting

The shooting began during the closing night of the Route 91 Harvest festival, an outdoor country-music event on the Las Vegas Strip. Stephen Paddock fired through windows of a suite on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, targeting the densely packed audience below. ¹ The attack lasted several minutes, and the distance, darkness, noise, and crowd movement made it difficult for people to identify the source of the gunfire.

Sixty victims were killed, while hundreds sustained gunshot wounds; many additional people were hurt while fleeing or responding to the emergency. The Federal Bureau of Investigation classified the incident as an active-shooter event, a designation based on the ongoing threat to people in a populated area. ²

Emergency response unfolded across the festival grounds, nearby hotels, hospitals, and roads as concertgoers sought shelter and medical help. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department led the local response, supported by firefighters, emergency medical personnel, hospital staff, and law-enforcement agencies. The scale of the casualties placed unusual pressure on communications, triage, transportation, and hospital coordination. ³

Police located Paddock in his hotel suite and found that he had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators recovered numerous firearms and large quantities of ammunition from the room and other locations. The FBI and local authorities found no established political, religious, or ideological motive, leaving the attack officially characterized by its actions rather than by a confirmed cause. ¹²

The shooting intensified national debate about gun violence, firearm regulation, event security, and the responsibilities of hotels and concert venues. Particular attention focused on bump stocks, devices that can increase the firing speed of certain semiautomatic rifles. In 2018, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives adopted a federal rule classifying bump stocks as machine guns under federal law, effectively prohibiting their possession under that interpretation. ⁴

Public-health researchers also examined the event as a mass-casualty disaster rather than solely as a criminal investigation. Studies considered trauma care, psychological effects, emergency preparedness, and the longer-term needs of survivors and families. Such work broadened the policy discussion beyond the weapon used to include prevention, medical capacity, and recovery after mass violence.

The incident affected people far beyond those struck by bullets: survivors reported acute stress, grief, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and other lasting effects, while first responders and medical workers also faced psychological burdens. The event therefore became a case study in the extended aftermath of mass trauma, not merely in the immediate death toll.

Official casualty totals can differ because agencies count different categories, including people killed at the scene, those who later died from injuries, people treated for gunshot wounds, and those injured while escaping. The FBI's active-shooter reporting provides a standardized national framework, but it does not replace local medical-examiner and hospital records. ² The shooting also prompted venues and hotels to reassess room access, surveillance, communications, evacuation planning, and coordination with emergency services.
