The Strait of Magellan is a navigable sea route in southern Chile separating mainland South America from Tierra del Fuego. The strait runs roughly east–west, linking the Atlantic Ocean (via the Strait of Le Maire and the open sea) to the Pacific Ocean. It separates the southern tip of mainland South America from the archipelago of Tierra del Fuego, with the Brunswick Peninsula and other islands to the north and Tierra del Fuego to the south. The channel is narrow, ranging from about 3 kilometers at its tightest point near the Isla Isabel to over 35 kilometers at its widest, and reaches depths of around 1,000 meters in places.
