Definition and classification

Python is a genus of large constricting snakes distinguished from venomous snakes by its method of subduing prey: it coils around an animal and restricts breathing and circulation rather than injecting venom. The genus belongs to Pythonidae, a family that also includes closely related genera such as Antaresia, Apodora, Malayopython, and Morelia.1 Species limits have changed as anatomical and genetic studies have refined relationships, so lists commonly report about ten living species rather than a permanently fixed number. The name is not a general scientific term for every large constrictor: boas, anacondas, and other pythonid genera are separate lineages. Among the best-known members are the ball python, Burmese python, reticulated python, African rock python, and Indian python.

Anatomy, behavior, and feeding

Python species are ambush predators whose flexible skulls, recurved teeth, muscular bodies, and expandable jaws allow them to swallow prey considerably wider than their heads. They kill by constriction, then consume mammals, birds, reptiles, and, in some species, fish or other aquatic prey.1 Most are primarily terrestrial or arboreal, while the reticulated and Burmese pythons are capable swimmers and frequently use water. Heat-sensitive labial pits along the snout help several species detect warm-bodied prey, especially in darkness. Digestion is metabolically demanding: after a large meal, a python’s digestive organs enlarge and later regress, a physiological cycle documented in studies of Burmese pythons.2 Although often portrayed as uniformly enormous, many species remain comparatively small, and size differs greatly between sexes and populations.

Reproduction and human significance

Python reproduction is notable because females of many species lay eggs and remain with the clutch, using muscular contractions and, in some cases, body positioning to raise egg temperature. This maternal brooding behavior contrasts with the common assumption that snakes simply abandon their eggs.3 Hatchlings are independent after emerging, but they face substantial mortality from predators, starvation, and habitat loss. People have long used pythons in folklore, trade, pest control, and food systems; their skins are also commercially valuable, making regulation and traceability important conservation concerns.4 Captive specimens are widespread, particularly ball pythons, but responsible husbandry requires secure housing, suitable thermal gradients, humidity, and prey management. Releases of large non-native pythons can create ecological problems, as demonstrated by Burmese pythons in southern Florida.5

Lesser-known aspects

Several details complicate the popular image of the genus. The so-called African rock python is represented by geographically differentiated forms, and taxonomic treatments have debated whether some should be recognized as separate species. The pygmy or Angolan python, Python anchietae, is unusually poorly known compared with its famous relatives and occupies rocky, relatively dry habitats in southwestern Africa. The Myanmar population called the Burmese python has also become an invasive predator in Florida, where its expansion is associated with severe declines in observations of several native mammals, although measuring causal effects in a complex wetland ecosystem remains difficult.5 Conservation status varies sharply among species: habitat conversion, collection, hunting, and the skin trade affect some populations, while others remain locally common. International trade in many python species is controlled through CITES listings and permits.4
