The ISBN-10 is the ten-digit International Standard Book Number format used to uniquely identify books and other monographic publications. It was the standard from 1970 until the transition to the 13-digit ISBN-13 in 2007, and it remains embedded in the metadata of millions of legacy titles and in the check-digit algorithms of modern systems.

Structure and check digit

The ISBN-10 is composed of four parts: a group identifier (country or language area), a publisher prefix, a title number, and a check digit. The first nine digits are assigned by national ISBN agencies and publishers, while the tenth is a mathematical check digit computed modulo 11. Specifically, the check digit is chosen so that the weighted sum of the digits, with weights 10 down to 1, is divisible by 11. When the required check digit is 10, the letter X is used (Roman numeral for ten), which is why ISBN-10 strings can contain an X only in the final position. This scheme detects any single-digit error and any transposition of two adjacent digits, making it far more robust than simple checksums.

Historical development

The ISBN system was devised in the United Kingdom in 1966 by W. H. Smith, the bookselling chain, as an extension of the Standard Book Numbering (SBN) system. The SBN used nine digits; the ISBN-10 added a leading group identifier to accommodate international use. The International Organization for Standardization adopted the ten-digit format as ISO 2108 in 1970.1 The system was rolled out globally over the following decades, with national agencies coordinating prefix allocation. By the early 2000s, the ISBN-10 had become the universal identifier for books, used in ordering, cataloging, and bibliographic databases. However, the finite capacity of the ten-digit space and the need to integrate with the EAN-13 barcode system prompted the development of the 13-digit ISBN-13, which became the official standard on January 1, 2007.2

Transition to ISBN-13 and legacy use

Since 2007, newly issued ISBNs are 13 digits, but ISBN-10 numbers remain valid for older publications and are still widely used in legacy databases, library catalogs, and second-hand book markets. The ISBN-13 is derived from the ISBN-10 by prefixing "978" (or "979") and recalculating the check digit using the EAN-13 algorithm; the ISBN-10 check digit is not simply carried over.3 Many online retailers and library systems accept both formats, converting automatically. Publishers who hold old stock may continue to print ISBN-10 barcodes, but new titles must use ISBN-13. The ISBN-10 is also used in the computation of the ISSN-L for serials, though that is a separate identifier.

Lesser-known aspects

Beyond its basic function, ISBN-10 has several niche details. The group identifier 0 or 1 covers English-speaking countries (US, UK, Australia, etc.), while 2 covers French, 3 German, 4 Japanese, and 5 Russian; smaller groups use longer prefixes, such as 99921 for Qatar. The publisher prefix length varies inversely with the size of the publisher: large publishers get short prefixes (e.g., 0-19 for Oxford University Press), while small presses get longer ones. The check digit algorithm is also used in other contexts, such as the Luhn algorithm for credit cards, but ISBN-10 uses a different modulus. A notable edge case is that the check digit X is case-insensitive in most systems, but some databases store it as uppercase. Additionally, ISBN-10 is sometimes used in the calculation of the DOI (Digital Object Identifier) for books, though DOIs are separate. The ISBN-10 has also been used in the illegal practice of "ISBN squatting," where individuals reserve numbers for books they never intend to publish, a problem that led to stricter agency controls.
