Early life and education

Hugh Grant was born in Hammersmith, London, to Fynvola Susan (née MacLean), a teacher, and James Murray Grant, a carpet salesman and artist. He attended the independent Latymer Upper School on a scholarship, then studied English literature at New College, Oxford, graduating with a 2:1. At Oxford he performed in student productions and was spotted by a talent agent, leading to his film debut in Privileged (1982).1

Romantic comedy stardom

Grant's breakthrough came with Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), which earned him a BAFTA and a Golden Globe. He became the archetype of the foppish English romantic lead, starring in Notting Hill (1999), Bridget Jones's Diary (2001), and About a Boy (2002).
