Dark Horse Comics

Dark Horse Comics was founded in 1986 by Mike Richardson, who had previously owned a chain of comic book retail stores in Oregon. The company began as a publisher of creator-owned titles, a model that was relatively uncommon at the time, and quickly gained attention with series like Dark Horse Presents and The American.¹ In 1992, Dark Horse acquired the rights to publish comics based on popular franchises such as Aliens, Predator, and Terminator, which became major commercial successes and helped establish the company as a major player in licensed comics.²

Dark Horse has been a pioneer in creator-owned publishing, allowing creators to retain ownership of their characters and stories. Notable creator-owned works include Sin City by Frank Miller, Hellboy by Mike Mignola, and The Umbrella Academy by Gerard Way. The company's commitment to creator rights has attracted many top talents and has influenced industry practices. Dark Horse also publishes the Dark Horse Maverick line, which focuses on experimental and creator-driven projects.

Dark Horse is renowned for its licensed comics based on film, television, and video game properties. It has published comics for Star Wars (before Disney's acquisition), Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Mass Effect. The company also produces original graphic novels and has expanded into prose publishing with its Dark Horse Books imprint. In 2021, Dark Horse launched a digital comics platform, Dark Horse Digital, to distribute its titles directly to readers.

Dark Horse has had a significant impact on the comics industry, particularly in legitimizing creator-owned work and demonstrating the viability of licensed comics outside the Big Two publishers. The company has received numerous Eisner Awards and has been recognized for its high production quality and innovative storytelling.³ Dark Horse also operates a film production arm, Dark Horse Entertainment, which has produced adaptations such as The Mask and Hellboy.

Beyond its well-known titles, Dark Horse has published niche and cult favorites such as Usagi Yojimbo by Stan Sakai, Concrete by Paul Chadwick, and Blacksad by Juan Díaz Canales and Juanjo Guarnido. The company also released the Star Wars: Dark Empire series, which was later declared non-canon by Disney but remains influential. Dark Horse has a history of supporting small-press and international creators, and its Dark Horse Presents anthology has been a launching pad for many new talents. In 2022, Dark Horse was acquired by Swedish gaming company Embracer Group, marking a new chapter in its corporate history.
